From Amsterdam’s innovative hubs to Rotterdam’s circular economy epicenters, the recent 5-day Deep Dive program in the Netherlands was nothing short of transformative for the 20 participants from the Armenian Circularity Coalition. Organized by Impact Hub Global and Impact Hub Amsterdam, this immersive experience aimed to build a shared understanding, competencies, and capacity for stimulating circular economy among Armenian CSO members.
Day 1: Foundations of Circular Economy
Our trip began in the heart of Amsterdam, where we received a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of the circular economy. We explored cutting-edge innovations and initiatives that have successfully turned waste into wealth. Meeting with local entrepreneurs and policymakers, we learned about the critical role of collaboration in advancing sustainability.
Day 2: Policymaking for Circularity
The second day took us to the north side of the IJ River, an area transformed from its industrial past into a hub of circular innovation. At De Ceuvel, we were inspired by Omar Ali’s tour from Metabolic, showcasing how the community overcame pollution through creative solutions. Presentations by the North Holland Ambassador of Circular Economy, Circular Innovation Collective, CircuLaw and other experts highlighted the importance of supportive policies and public-private partnerships in fostering a circular economy.
Day 3: Circular Funding and Investing
Focusing on the financial aspects of circularity, Day 3 was hosted at the DOEN Foundation, one of the very first circular buildings in Amsterdam. We delved into the challenges and opportunities of funding circular businesses. Impact investors and startups shared their journeys, providing valuable insights into securing investments for sustainable projects. Discussions with Rubio and CircularIQ emphasized the importance of innovative financial models and tools in supporting circular ventures.
Day 4: Circular Economy Programs and SMEs in Rotterdam
In Rotterdam, we visited BlueCity, a former swimming pool turned into a circular economy hub. Here, we talked to the municipality and city representatives and explored local policies and programs that support circular businesses. From meeting innovative architects at Superuse Studios to learning about the municipality’s initiatives, we gained a deeper understanding of how cities can drive circular transitions. The day concluded with a tour of BlueCity’s resident startups and a visit to a circular beer brewery, Vet & Lazy.
Day 5: Circular Food and Agriculture
Our final day was dedicated to circular food and agriculture. We explored how programs like Hotel Neutraal promote short supply chains and sustainable food practices. Highlights included a visit to Rotterzwam, where coffee grounds are recycled into mushroom cultivation, and a tour of Food Union, a hub for culinary innovation. The day ended with a reflective discussion, summarizing our learnings and envisioning how these insights can be applied in Armenia.
This Deep Dive program has equipped the Armenian Circular Economy Coalition members with valuable knowledge and practical examples of how to implement circular economy principles. The experience underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, innovative funding mechanisms, and supportive policies in driving the transition to a sustainable future.
By fostering international connections and learning from global leaders in circularity, we are more prepared than ever to cultivate a thriving circular economy in Armenia. The insights gained and networks built during this trip will undoubtedly help us develop and implement impactful circular initiatives back home.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the organizers, partners, and impact businesses who shared their expertise and experiences with us. Together, we are paving the way for a more sustainable and circular future.
